Rose quartz is one of the most popular semi-precious gemstones today. It is known as the Love Stone and has been connected with matters of the heart in many different cultures for centuries. It is the birthstone for January and the zodiac stone of Taurus (21st April to 21st May).
How and where rose quartz is formed
Rose quartz is a fair, gentle pink crystal made from silicon dioxide and is one of the most common varieties of the quartz family. It has a hazy, semi-transparent opacity with plenty of beautiful inclusions within in. Rose quartz only forms in masses and does not have any crystal faces, edges or terminations unlike crystal quartz or amethyst, which are also found in the quartz family.
Rose quartz is formed when hot magma pushes up silicon and titanium through empty spaces and weak points in the earth’s crust. As the magma gets closer to the surface it starts to cool and get trapped in the earth’s crust. Here the silicon mixes with oxygen, which creates quartz. It is trace amounts of titanium, iron, and manganese in the cooling period that gives the quartz a rosy pink appearance, making it rose quartz.
Rose quartz comes in a range of pink tones, but is most commonly found as a pale, cotton candy pink. It can vary from a very pale pink (almost clear) to a deeper, dark pink. The more titanium, iron and manganese that is present, the deeper the colour.
Rose quartz is commercially mined in Brazil but is commonly formed underground around the world in locations such as Madagascar, Namibia, South-Africa, India, Japan and the USA. Most of the rose quartz used in my jewellery hails from Brazil.
